The Geekery Market Spotlight: Wayward Stitches

Welcome to The Geekery Market (formerly the Muggles Market). We are excited for our next event – just in time for all your geeky holiday shopping needs! As usual, we’ll be introducing you all to our artisans/authors/artists, sponsors, and activities for the Market every week as we get closer to the big day.

Please allow me to introduce to you one of our new artisians, Wayward Stitches. Wayward Stitches is a woman & veteran owned menagerie for fandom, eclectic, and nerdy goods.

Answers to our 5 Geeky Questions

Tell us about the geeky goodness you’ll be bringing to the next Geekery Market! I will be bringing a variety of one-of-a-kind handmade bags, accessories, and decor. All items are sewn or embroidered by me.

How did you get started doing what you do? I learned to sew as a child and would make or alter my own clothes over the years. After I left the military and was seeking help with PTSD and other issues, one of my therapists asked if I had a hobby. I hadn’t sewn anything for quite a while at that point, but they encouraged me to start again. Between that and being tired of only finding ill-fitting clothing, I started sewing again. After basically making a whole wardrobe, I branched off into bag-making. My mom traded her embroidery/sewing machine for my basic sewing machine, and that got my embroidery journey started. After piling up a bunch of makes and them taking up space, my SO said “either sell them or donate them”. Having imposter syndrome, I didn’t think they would be good enough to sell, but friends and family encouraged me, thus here I am years later still making and selling things.

What’s an item you are bringing that you are really excited about? My Bumbastic Bags. They are ridiculously huge, but I love them. It’s a sling bag, but great for holding convention merch, scootering or biking to the store and back, etc.

What else would you like everyone to know about your wares? Everything is made with love and swear words.

What’s your favorite holiday story? Probably Practical Magic. The casting, soundtrack, plot, and aesthetics still hold up, as does the message of breaking generational curses and supporting one another through trauma..
