The Geekery Market Spotlight: Dragonsgate

Welcome to The Geekery Market (formerly the Muggles Market). We are excited for our next event – just in time for all your geeky holiday shopping needs! As usual, we’ll be introducing you all to our artisans/authors/artists, sponsors, and activities for the Market every week as we get closer to the big day.

Please allow me to introduce to you one of our new artisians, Dragonsgate. Dragonsgate includes author James Maxey and artist Cheryl Maxey. James and Cheryl live in Hillsborough, North Carolina with their many cats. When they aren’t creating you can find them outdoors – biking, hiking and kayaking.

Answers to our 4 Geeky Questions

Tell us about the geeky goodness you’ll be bringing to the next Geekery Market! Dragonsgate features books, buttons, and crochet critters created by James and Cheryl Maxey. James is the author of the Bitterwood and Dragon Apocalypse novels. His newest release is the non-fiction book, Cryptids: How We Know They are Real. Cheryl specializes in custom crochet creations of fantasy creatures like dragons and krakens.

How did you get started doing what you do? James: My mother warned me that if didn’t stop reading comic books I’d damage my brain. She was right! Now I’m unfit for decent work, and have to type out my demented fantasies and hope people will give me money for these. Cheryl: Since James wrote fantasy novels, I decided I’d crochet him a dragon as a gift. I’d never tackled anything so elaborate, but with the help of YouTube and Facebook forums I was able to hone my skills, and now crochet entire menageries.

What’s an item you are bringing that you are really excited about? James: My most recent book, Cryptids: How We Know They are Real, has been selling out show after show. I wrote this book because I believe cryptids are a gateway to a better understanding of our world, and a better understanding of ourselves. Cheryl’s stock of critters changes rapidly, with very few items lasting for more than a few shows before finding a home. But, she’s likely to bring octopus, dragons, and maybe a mothman or two.

What else would you like everyone to know about your wares? We sell at shows throughout the south, and as far west as New Orleans, but this will be our first show near Charlotte since 2019. Looking forward to seeing some of our old friends from events like Heroescon and ConCarolinas.
