The Geekery Market Spotlight: MODERNGOLDFISH

Welcome to The Geekery Market (formerly the Muggles Market). We are excited for our next event – just in time for all your geeky holiday shopping needs! As usual, we’ll be introducing you all to our artisans/authors/artists, sponsors, and activities for the Market every week as we get closer to the big day.

Please allow me to introduce to you one of our artisans, MODERNGOLDFISH. MODERNGOLDFISH is art inspired by literature, culture, and the modern human experience. Fueled by love.

Answers to our 5 Geeky Questions

Tell us about the geeky goodness you’ll be bringing to the next Geekery Market! We are beyond thrilled to return to the Geekery Market – we love y’all so much! The geeky goodness we can’t make enough of are wands, decorative potions (we have a brand new extra large Felix Felicis that has it’s own stand), stained glass – think nerdy witches (any classics nerds out there – I’m making another Medusa Mirror), light catchers, feather pens, dice jails, bags of holding, handmade and painted Icosahedron earrings, AND jewelry. But mostly cool earrings.

How did you get started doing what you do?Bryan and Kenna have been making art since they can remember. Kenna made her first wand 11 years ago for a friend and never stopped. Bryan is an industrial designer and making things is his jam. Kenna started making wands and after giving them to all our friends, they started piling up – someone suggested selling them at a market and we were so well received and validated that we continued while we both had full time jobs. We ebbed and flowed in and out of other jobs until taking the leap to be full time artists. It’s wonderful and terrifying and we don’t want to do anything else. There is so much love to be shared.

What’s an item you are bringing that you are really excited about? There’s so many – stained glass has really taken over Kenna’s heart this year, but wands remain at the front – so it has to be these owl wands. Y’all! So, we are all in love with The Owl House right now and Kenna makes an owl wand that is so sweet that Eda would love. Bubo, Athena’s owl from Clash of the Titans was one of Kenna’s first favorite characters. And of course, our beloved Hedwig… owls receive much love from Moderngoldfish!

What else would you like everyone to know about your wares? We would like for you to know that our love travels with you. We are very aware of the transfer of energy and try our best to work from a place of positivity, kindness, and love. It brings tears to our eyes when we think about people opening our work as gifts. The fact that we are able to live as artists with our sweet, growing young man-son shines a light on the gratitude that we have everyday and each time we are able to set up and share our work. We are proof that with passion, hard work, and the right skill sets, you can create the life you dream. Thank you for being part of our journey!

What’s your favorite holiday story? ryan’s favorite holiday story is A Christmas Story. You’ll shoot your eye out kid! Kenna’s favorite is O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi. This is us. Over and over again. As a family, it has to be Jim Henson’s Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas. Here’s my shameless plug for Bryan’s Riverbottom Nightmare Band shirt – available online only.
