Welcome once again to The Geekery Market artisian spotlight. Today we introduce The Snark Shop, owned and opearted by Susan Roddey. She writes dark speculative fiction and works as a book formatter, cover designer, and developmental editor, both for hire and for several independent presses. She is also a voracious reader, wanna-be chef, and amateur gamer. She lives in the Piedmont area of South Carolina with a house full of humans, cats, books, and yarn, and spends entirely too much time yelling at her sewing machine. She also writes romance under the name Siobhan Kinkade.

What Else You Should Know About Them:
What kind of geeky goodness will you be bringing with you to the next Geekery Market?
So...Much... STUFF! I'm a writer first and foremost, so all of my books will be available. But I am also, as you can tell, a serial crafter (oh, the joys of ADHD!), which means I have lots and lots and LOTS of hobbies. Crochet and sewing are my first loves, though, which is why there's so much of it. I'll have amigurumi and plushie toys, but not your average stuff. The majority of what I make is weird. Cryptids and creepy things are my favorite. Here there be dragons, mothmen, jackalopes, reapers, and all sorts of strange and unusual things. For my handmade bags and pouches, both the designs and fabrics tend to be equally as odd. I've never been one to play by conventional rules, so why should my products?
What's an item you are bringing that you are really excited about?
I love my dragons! I started making large-scale plushies about a year ago, and so far the giant dragons are my favorite item. They take a little bit of work, but they're the most amazing things when they're done! My daughters adore them (I had to make four before I actually managed to keep one long enough to sell). Each dragon has its own little personality, and it's fascinating to me how well I get to know them while I'm making them. No two are exactly the same, which is as it should be for dragons, right?
What was the first item you ever made? How did you learn to make it?
My Aunt Donna taught me to crochet when I was 8. I started out making the wonkiest granny square potholders and coasters ever. After she moved to Colorado, I quit doing it, but found my crochet hooks and some old yarn in a box when I moved at 21, and that was when I really picked it back up and started teaching myself. I haven't looked back.
What else would you like everyone to know about your wares?
My items are made in a facility with cats (my living room, mostly), but I do try my best to keep the pet contact to a minimum.
If you could travel anywhere in space or time, real or imagined, where would you want to go?
My answer is never as imaginative as people expect it to be. I'd go back to when my dad was still here just to record a conversation with him so I could hear his voice again whenever I want.
Come see them live at The Geekery Market on Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 10am to 4PM at the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center - 4751 NC Highway 49 (Event Center B).
