We are excited to announce the return of the Muggles Market, just in time for Valentine’s Day! This year’s theme is Muggles Market: Love and Plunder, combining our adoration of pirates and love. As usual, you have a wonderful opportunity to get to know our artists, writers, artisans, and entertainment through our Muggles Market Spotlights.
Author Misty Massey is a long time friend of our Muggles Markets. We asked Mistry a few questions about their life, work, and what treasures they’ll be bringing to Muggles Market: Love and Plunder.
Tell us all about the plunder you’ll be bringing to Muggles Market.
There’s nothing better than a fine book at the end of a long day of sailing, and I’ll have plenty of rollicking adventures on hand: Mad Kestrel and Kestrel’s Dance, the first two books in my Mad Kestrel series of pirate fantasy adventures; Submerged, an anthology of stories that all take place on or in the ocean; and Fairyland and Pirateland, coloring books for relieving your stress and reviving your creativity.
How did you get started making your glorious plunder?
I’ve always been a writer, but I turned my eye toward publication shortly after my son was born. I joined a writing group, and met Faith Hunter, who took me under her wing and insisted I had more than just a couple of short stories in my future. And she was right!
What’s an item you are bringing that you are really excited about?
I’m thrilled to offer Kestrel’s Dance, the second book in my series. It took me a long time to finish, and knowing it’s here at last makes me want to sing about it. I can’t wait for people to dive in and enjoy the story!
What else would you like everyone to know about your wares?
I’m always working on new projects, and I’d love to chat with readers about what they’d like to see from me.
What’s your favorite love or pirate story and why?
My favorite pirate book had to be On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. Blackbeard, ghosts, voodoo, zombies, the fabled Fountain of Youth, swashbuckling action and romance – it’s got it all. And if you’ve only seen the movie that borrowed it’s title, don’t fear – the book has SO much more to offer you!
Speaking of movies, I’ve been a fan of Captain Blood, the classic pirate movie starring Errol Flynn, since my teens. If you wonder where the old trope of pirates sliding down billowing sails by their daggers, this is probably it.
And love story? That’d be my own. We met over a D&D table, and we celebrated our 36th anniversary in October. Nothing like gaming to help you find true love!
