MODERNGOLDFISH
Hey there! It's time for a Geekery Market Spotlight. Today we bring you returning artisans, Modern Goldfish.
What Else You Should Know About Them:
Describe all the geeky goodness you'll be bringing to the next Geekery Market! What kind of items will you be selling?
The great geeky goodness we'll be bringing to the next Geekery Market is glass! Kenna and Bryan have been making stained glass that expresses what is in their hearts, on their minds, and a few things that have been healing their childhoods. Will there be wands? Of course there will be (how could we not), but the main focus this year is on our stained glass work.
What is something that surprised you about making / selling your wares?
Something that surprised us long ago about selling our wares was the connections that came about. This is work that we make because we're exploring our own existence - and to connect with others and have that work appreciated is enormous. The love, validation, and support that comes from people collecting our work is something that surprises us year after year. Thank you!
What has been one of your favorite stories so far while running your business?
One of our favorite stories while running our business is our love story. Bryan and I started this business when our kiddo was 6 and he'll be 20 this year. We've grown a family doing this. Our art is sending our young one to college to become a librarian. Bryan and I have both evolved, grown, and gotten better at being humans through the process of running our business. We have a weekly breakfast meeting and call it our Monday Morning Mogo Meeting (Mogo is our nickname for Modern Goldfish) where we talk about our wins, losses, things we're proud of and things we'll change. Having a weekly check in has helped us not only with our business, but to be more in tune with each other. I know we both feel infinitely lucky to be loved by someone who will move mountains to support them.
What is an interesting fact about your wares / business that you want to make sure everyone knows?
An interesting fact about our work is that every piece of stained glass is touched by both of us. Bryan and Kenna both design the pieces you'll see at the market. Kenna selects and cuts each piece of glass. Bryan grinds and foils each individual piece of glass, and Kenna solders all of the pieces together. We work very hard to keep our energy levels high while we work because you can feel that in a finished work of art. We know that you will be living with our work, sharing your own energy with it, and we want to do our part.
Looking over the list of artisans this year, what is one of the booths you are looking forward to visiting?
All of them!!!! This event brings some of the very coolest artists together! One of my favorite things in the world is being part of a community of artists and here they are! We love SeaBear Arts, Wizarding Arts, Loyal Wyvern, Space Wizard Science Fantasy, Stingers and Web, Ruminine Potions - yep, everyone! The coolest part of being in a community of artists is seeing everyone as they evolve. It's really cool to watch someone's art get better; we feel it with our own work and love seeing it in everyone else. We love meeting artists who grok that our best work is ahead of us, that this entire journey is a journey. Thank you all for joining us on ours and letting us be part of yours. I will say, that Sam at SeaBear is just one of our favorite humans on the planet and her work always makes me happy!
