Fan Favorite Fragrances is a small scale perfume manufacturer hand creating fandom-inspired perfumes and colognes inspired by pop culture heroes, villains, and familiar fictional settings. Ellen Walsh (she/they) has been perfuming as a hobby since she was a child, when she received a “make your own” scent kit for her eighth birthday. She even still has some of the perfumes she made back then! As she grew older and geekier and fell in love with some of her favorite fandoms, she combined her two passions by blending scents inspired by pop culture, and inspired by some of the characters she admired – first for herself, then as gifts for friends and family, and finally she took the plunge and launched Elden Fragrances as a sole proprietorship in 2017. She’s since rebranded to Fan Favorite Fragrances to better reflect the nature of the products (and stop getting stomped by the video game Elden Ring’s Perfume item in SEO searches ?) With the support and assistance of her partners Frank and James, she handles everything from the perfume development itself, to production and shipping and everything else that goes into running a small crafting business (she’s writing this paragraph in third person, too!).

What Else You Should Know About Them:

Describe all the geeky goodness you'll be bringing to the next Geekery Market! What kind of items will you be selling?

I make perfumes based on some of my favorite fandoms, like Batman villains, Scooby Doo characters, and Steven Universe gems! I also use those scents to make things like custom scented jewelry and scented stationery.

What is something that surprised you about making / selling your wares?

I'm always surprised by how many ways there are to smell the same scent! 15 different people could smell one of my perfumes and describe it 15 different ways. Scent is such an intensely personal thing, wrapped up in everything from childhood memories to skin chemistries, that no two people will ever experience the same scent in quite the same way.

What has been one of your favorite stories so far while running your business?

My favorite story has got to be the time that one of my regulars was such an amazing fan of my work that they accidentally became a one-person marketing team, sending tons of sales my way just from keeping my site open on their phone and talking me up to everyone who asked about the scent they were wearing!

What is an interesting fact about your wares / business that you want to make sure everyone knows?

Most people assume that "perfumes" are for girls and "colognes" are for boys, but both terms are actually gender neutral! Instead, they refer to the concentration of the scent, with perfumes on the stronger end and colognes a little lighter. There's a whole scale of intensities that also includes "eau fraiche" at the very lightest end and "eau de toilette" in the middle.

Looking over the list of artisans this year, what is one of the booths you are looking forward to visiting?

I'm intrigued by Dusty Rose Coffee Roasters - they have a super pretty name, and I love trying local coffees! I'm also excited to see my best friend Dandelion Smiles. <3

The event is FREE to the public, but we are requesting a donation of canned goods or cash which goes to our charity, Second Harvest Metrolina.
