In Memoriam: Leon Fortner

Leon Fortner, his wife Mary and son Phillip

This week, the entire Geek community mourns the loss of longtime ally and Charlotte Geeks supporter, Leon Fortner. Leon died on Thursday, September 1st, during a fatal hit-and-run in Concord, NC. Our hearts go out to his wife Mary, son Phillip, and the entirety of the Get Some Game family during this time of great loss.

Personally, Leon has always been exceedingly generous and supportive of the Charlotte Geeks and the Geek Gala. “Whatever you need,” was always his response anytime we came asking for a donation or a favor. He hosted several events at the GSG site, as well as donating various games, participating in our events, and offering his advice and contacts. Just 2 weeks ago, we had a lovely chat at the recent Authors & Dragons convention, discussing ways we could collaborate in the coming months. And as always, “whatever you need,” quickly sprung from his lips.

There are others who knew him much better than I, that can speak more eloquently of his generosity and kindness. But let me join the chorus who honors this giant of our community, and is devastated by this senseless loss.

Joey moved to Charlotte in 2008 and loves it here! She started the Charlotte Geeks after returning from Dragon*Con and whining "But I don't want to wait 360 days to hang out with my people again!!" Self-dubbed the GiddyGeeker, her geekdoms are Doctor Who, Marvel, Boardgaming, British TV (MisFits, Orphan Black, Sherlock, The IT Crowd, etc) and she is slightly addicted to FUNKO pops.
