Muggles Market Spotlight: Wish We Had Acres

Welcome to another Muggles Market Spotlight for 2017! Today, we are delighted to announce the addition of new artisan Wish We Had Acres to our second annual Muggles’ Market at this year’s Geek Gala. Laura Denyes & Dr. Dave Hamilton took a few minutes to answer some questions about their business and general geekery.

  • What kinds of items will you be selling at this year’s Muggles Market?
Goat milk soap, all natural products hand crafted by us at the farmstead including bug spray, deodorant, beard oil, chapstick and a full herbal apothecary of salves and tinctures. So… potions. 🙂
  • How did you first get started making these things?
Dr. Dave is a naturopathic physician and Laura is an herbalist. After a summer at the Reevis Mountain School of Self Reliance, Laura pursued permaculture and water harvesting certifications, while Dave obtained his degree in naturopathic medicine. We began raising chickens and dairy goats to develop a more resourceful lifestyle that enabled them to give back to the community. Our desire to connect with our food source led to giving tours of our backyard, then teaching basic classes, then evolved into offering natural products to others with less time or space available that wanted effective natural alternatives for self care.
  • What has been one of your favorite projects to work on?
Everything we do was a favorite project at some point! We are always pursuing something new, as the spirit of our lifestyle is to learn from our environment and our community. We love what we do, we love how we live, we love above all our goats and our farm dogs. Our animals keep us grounded and humble. In our future we aspire to do more with fermentation, including specialty craft beer, kombucha, and aged cheeses.
  • So this year’s Geek Gala pays homage to Godzilla movies – if you were to create a Godzilla movie today – what type of nemesis do you think he should fight against?
According to Dr. Dave, Godzilla needs to fight a hotdog — in support of Jaime Oliver’s Food Revolution. What we all need is real food.

  • And make plans to come visit them on Saturday, October 21st at this year’s Geek Gala
