Muggles Market Spotlight: J.Radford, Bookbinder & Book Artist

Welcome to another Muggles Market Spotlight for 2017! Today, we are delighted to announce the addition of new artisan J. Radford, Bookbinder & Book Artist to our second annual Muggles’ Market at this year’s Geek Gala. Jackie Radford took a few minutes to answer some questions about her business and general geekery.

  • What kinds of items will you be selling at this year’s Muggles Market?
I’m a book binder, and I will be bringing my handbound leather journals.
  • How did you first get started making these things?
Reading and books have always been magical to me, able to transport me to wonderful places. I had no idea that I could make my own books until i saw a YouTube video on book binding. I quickly exhausted all of the DIY approaches to book binding, and I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted to really delve into historical book bindings and alternative book structures, so I studied at Penland School of Craft.
  • What has been one of your favorite projects to work on?
My favorite projects are the commissions that i’m able to do as surprise gifts. I love pulling photos from Instagram and printing special emails into journals that commemorate a special occasion.
  • What else can you tell us about yourself?
I was a role-player and writer for 3 years for two different fandoms.
  • So this year’s Geek Gala pays homage to Godzilla movies – if you were to create a Godzilla movie today – what type of nemesis do you think he should fight against?
An irradiated animal from the Fukishima forest!

  • And make plans to come visit them on Saturday, October 21st at this year’s Geek Gala
