Muggles Market Spotlight: Forge of the Phoenix

Welcome to another Muggles Market Spotlight for 2017! Today, we are delighted to announce the addition of new artisan Forge of the Phoenix to our second annual Muggles’ Market at this year’s Geek Gala. Chelsea Penny took a few minutes to answer some questions about her business and general geekery.

  • What kinds of items will you be selling at this year’s Muggles Market?
    Super awesome cool ones!

Oh no – you mean like what are they…

I make chain- and scale- mail jewelry and accessories in all colors and for all occasions!

  • How did you first get started making these things?
Oh man! OK – buckle up guys this is a story!

So I’ve always been super artsy fartsy, and loved making things. Well when I was in high school, one day I really just needed something new to work on. So I went to the library to go look through the how-to books. I never made it to actually looking through the books because front and center was a chain mail jewelry book. This blew my teenage mind. I always found chain mail fascinating, but I didn’t realize that it was even a thing people did anymore. I didn’t realize you could do anything with it other than armor. So yeah, I devoured that book and bought wire and started making chainmail.

And I’ve been at it ever since!!

  • What has been one of your favorite projects to work on?
Probably the bikini top. It was insane, I kept putting off working on it because it was going so smoothly, and I just knew I was going to screw something up. But no, I slowly worked through it and didn’t mess anything up, AND I didn’t even have to make any sizing adjustments. Having a project go so smoothly from start to finish is an amazing feeling. Gotta love the power of math, man!

  • What else can you tell us about yourself?
Hmmmm what can I tell you? I am a person who gets really really excited about seemingly silly things, like outer space. I have two children who are obsessed with dragons. My daughter has an awesome geeky middle name, and I’m still kind of mad we couldn’t find one for my son. Oh, and my husband stole Dark Souls from me even though he didn’t want to play it when I first bought it. It’s his favorite game series now. Thanks a lot, Adam! One of our life goals is to buy or build a Victorian house and steampunk ALL OF IT!

  • So this year’s Geek Gala pays homage to Godzilla movies – if you were to create a Godzilla movie today – what type of nemesis do you think he should fight against?
A swarm of giant angry bees. Ok no that’s a bad fight – it would be over very fast because fire. Cthulhu. Definitely Cthulhu.

  • And make plans to come visit them on Saturday, October 21st at this year’s Geek Gala
