Welcome to Muggles Market Monday! Each week we are spotlighting one of the artisans scheduled to appear at our brand new Muggles’ Market at this year’s Geek Gala. This week’s featured artisan is Lily Pad Crafts! Rona Herman took a few minutes to answer some questions about her business and general geekery.
- What kind of items will you be selling at this year’s Muggles Market?
At the Market, I’ll be selling some of my homemade sewing crafts, including wedge pillows, cell phone and tablet wedges, shoulder bags and a few other little goodies. All of these items are made using ‘geeky’ type fabrics like Wonder Woman, Avengers, Batman, Dr. Who, and even a few wizards. - How did you first get started making these things?
Honestly, the first item I made was a quilt for my husband’s motorcycle club. One led to another, then another, but I wanted to make more than just quilts. So, I ventured into other items to see what people would like. I’ve been a geek at heart most of my life so, of course, I was drawn to those fabrics. Now, I make items for geeks and bikers alike!
- What has been one of your favorite projects to work on?
To date, my favorite project was a king size quilt I made for a friend in Arizona. She wanted something with a pirate theme so I took one of my original designs and tweeked it to make it look kind of like a pirate ship with the water below, ships deck and sky above. It even had it’s own “booty” mixed inside. That quilt almost didn’t leave my house because I loved it so much. But, in the end, I knew Jen would love it just as much as I did.
- What else can you tell us about yourself?
This is always my worst question. I hate talking about myself. Let’s see, I am a wife and mother of a 19 year old son. Originally from Louisiana, I grew up in Washington state and moved here to NC in 2012. Currently, I run Lily Pad Crafts, have a store ‘cubby’ at Sweet P’s on Main in Clover, SC and work part time at JoAnn Fabric here in Charlotte. The name ‘Ribbit’ comes from my husband’s club. I have a giant frog tattoo on my leg and a collection of frog stuff so… the name fit.
- So this year’s Geek Gala is about space travel – if you could join any TV/Movie space crew – who would it be and why?
Oh my goodness. This is a hard one. The obvious answer for me would be either Star Wars (my first introduction to sci-fi) or Star Trek TNG (I’ve seen every episode twice). But, there’s so many other great ones to choose from! If I HAD to choose just one, I believe I’d choose the new Star Trek movies. Mostly because I have a crush on half the cast.
