Welcome to Muggles Market Monday! Each week we are spotlighting one of the artisans scheduled to appear at our brand new Muggles’ Market at this year’s Geek Gala. This week’s featured artisan is Dungeonwears. Garrett Faith took a few minutes to answer some questions about his business and general geekery.
- What kind of items will you be selling at this year’s Muggles Market?
Dungeonwears will be bringing original, outrageous, madcap designs digitally hand forged right here in Charlotte by a lifelong artist and enthusiast of all things awesome and unusual. Designs are available on shirts, prints, stickers, postcards and more. Custom requests welcome! Whether you want a robotic squirrel battling a zombie horde in a post-apocalyptic landscape, or just a beloved pet portrait, I will make magic happen.
- How did you first get started making these things?
I have been painting, drawing and just creating art as long as I can remember. Years of working in the indie video game industry as an artist and then art director, I did less painting and more yelling at people to make art. Being behind the scenes for so long, I finally wanted to just to create my own art. Bringing fine wearable art to all corners of the land is my quest… no, my creed! Wherever a damsel is wizard kitten-less, or a knight is in need of a surfing werewolf, I will be there. Nothing in life is better than to see the eyes of my patrons light up from the sheer awesomeness of my work.
- What has been one of your favorite projects to work on?
One of my most favorite projects was having the privilege of painting a most awesome fine art portrait: a piece depicting a lovely lady and dog owner riding her beloved corgi into battle, a personalized take on the Welsh legend. Capturing the spirits of both subjects and painting them as armored warriors was just a fun and fresh experience. This twist on a classic art staple was a blast to work on.
- What else can you tell us about yourself?
My tale is an exceptional one filled with fine art, roof top sword fights, werewolf hunting, damsels in distress and boundless adventure. Tutored in the arts from some of the finest schools, I have multiple degrees, years of industry experience and vast knowledge. I have been involved in many professional ventures over the years, from interning for Marvel designing action figures, to working in the indie video game industry and taking on lots of fun freelance art projects. My love of painting and all things pop culture, sci-fi, medieval, and just all around cool is why I take part in this little adventure I call Dungeonwears. Providing a piece of fine art to the masses is something this humble artist and proprietor has always dreamed of. Giving a piece of my soul to each patron and making a connection to people through art has been such an amazing experience and the highlight of my career. I guess all the stories of swordfights and lycanthrope stalking will have to wait for another time.
- So this year’s Geek Gala is about space travel – if you could join any TV/Movie space crew – who would it be and why?
Well I’m a classic, old school kind of guy and as a kid I always dreamed of manning the helm with Han Solo on one of his shady space smuggling adventures. Sure, the Millennium Falcon may not be shiny or new, but she’s got it where it counts… remember, glamour does not make up for substance. High fiving Han Solo after making off with smuggled cargo, having survived another a fierce space dogfight… well, my inner ten year old geek’s head would just literally explode from the sheer awesomeness.
