PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, NC – SEPTEMBER 21, 2015 – The Charlotte Geeks officially announced today that steampunk musicians Valentine Wolfe, Robot Johnson Sketch Comedy Group, and burlesque troupe Nerd-Vana will be among the performers appearing at this year’s Geek Gala.
This will be the 7th year for the annual charity event that benefits Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. This year’s theme is 2015 Geek Gala: Monster Mash and focuses on classic black and white monster movies like Dracula and Wolfman as well as popular 80s films such as Ghostbusters and Gremlins.
“We call it a Gala, but really it’s the geekiest Halloween party in the Carolinas,” explains Charlotte Geeks’ founder and event organizer Joey Paquette, “It’s a place where folks can come and really get their Geek on with musical and comedy performances, games, food, contests, and amazing prizes and raffles – all for a good cause.”
Other events scheduled for the 2015 Geek Gala include a short film fest, Geeks Got Talent! Contest, free caricatures, psychic card readers, costume contest, Geek Trivia, board gaming, geek-inspired carnival games, and the Geeky Goody Basket raffle. The Geek Gala is an annual charitable event, with all raffle proceeds benefitting Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, a local nonprofit that is supported by the Dave Thomas Foundation.
Ms. Paquette holds the annual event in memory of her adopted little sister Christina, who passed away in 2005. “It’s important to give back, whatever you can.” Joey states. “I started the Charlotte Geeks in 2008 to help find other geeky people like me, and it only seemed appropriate that as our numbers grew, we reach out and give back to the community we live in. Kids in crisis are dear to our hearts because as geeks, we’ve also felt like the ones looking for a place to call home.”
The Geeks Got Talent! Contest and the 2015 Geek Gala is on Saturday, October 24th at The Big Chill Doors at 911 E Morehead Street Charlotte, NC. The Film Festival and Board gaming events are free and open to the public from 2 PM to 5 PM. The main event starts at 6 PM. Event Tickets are $30 online or $35 at the door.
