Geek Gala Entertainment Spotlight: DJ Spider!

Welcome to the first Geek Gala Entertainment Spotlight for 2018! Today, we are delighted to introduce you to a truly great entertainer, DJ Spider, who is part of the entertainment at our tenth annual Geek Gala! DJ Spider took a few minutes to answer some questions about her music and general geekery.

She’s also a founding member of the Charlotte Geeks – and was there for the very first meeting!

About DJ Spider

It’s hard to categorize DJ Spider’s style – with a love of multiple genres, she’d had a chance to spin just about everything over the last 29 years, including pop, rock, dance, house, indie, retro, darkwave, country, R&B, swing, jazz, and just about everything in between. With her diverse love of music, you’ll probably get a little something you didn’t expect at one of her gigs and you’ll probably smile at least once.

She has been voted “Charlotte’s Best Party DJ” for 7 years (2006-2011, 2013) by the readers of Creative Loafing, and continues to remain active both in the Queen City and across the south. Locally, she has held residencies at the Visulite for Big Mamma’s House of Burlesque, Retroactive Thursdays at the Breakfast Club and Purgatory at Amos’ Southend. Spider has also been a sci-fi convention DJ for over ten years, with regular appearances at HeroesCon, ConCarolinas, DragonCon, and more.

Currently, you can find her at Digital Noir at the Milestone, as well as local venues around town. In her free time, Spider can be found cooking, cosplaying, indulging in geekery and maintaining a number of pets. And, yes, she really is that tall.

    • How would you describe your musical or performance style to someone who has never heard you before?
Permanent shuffle mode? I spin a little bit of everything!
    • What is your most recent project, either currently in progress or recently completed?
I just got back from Dragon Con, where I had the honor to play both the Dark Crystal Ball at the Center for Puppetry Arts and the massive Heroes and Villains Ball at the Westin.
    • If you could form a super group with two other performers, bands, or musicians (real or fictional) throughout time and space, who would it be and why?
Dazzler and Jem…A portable light show from Ali and never having a bad hair day again thanks to Synergy!
    • So this year’s Geek Gala theme is “Gears and Ghouls”, and focuses on steampunk and day of the dead cosplay. If you could have one body part cybernetically enhanced or replaced, what would you choose, how would you want it changed, and why?
A bionic eye – threading needles would be so much easier 🙂
    • Where can we listen to your work and buy your music and/or other products?
I have my Nerdvana mixes up at my Podomatic – free to stream or download! DJ Spider on Podomatic
